HAMDEN, Conn. — A Quinnipiac University student was arrested after a bomb threat "hoax" prompted an investigation and building evacuations Wednesday, according to Hamden police Thursday.
Quinnipiac student Nkemakoam Okafor, 22, of Rochester, N.Y., is facing a charge of breach of peace in the first degree. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is expected in Meriden Superior Court on Sept. 20.
At 2:13 p.m. Wednesday, Hamden police went to 275 Mount Carmel Ave., where the Carl Hansen Student Center and Teton Hall are located, after receiving a report of a bomb threat.
A student had notified public safety about a post on Yik Yak, a social media platform, that there was a pipe bomb in the student center, a university spokesperson said Wednesday.
The New Haven Police Department Bomb Squad was called as the building was evacuated, according to police.
The Hamden Police Department Detective Division identified Okafor as a suspect, who admitted to officers that he had posted the bomb threat online. Investigators who searched the building found no suspicious items and determined that there was no threat.
Det. Vincenzo Palma was the lead detective for the investigation, police said.
