East Haven police arrest woman for Friday's fatal hit-and-run

Elizabeth Cronk, 45, was taken into custody and faces charges including Evading Responsibility Resulting in Death.

EAST HAVEN, Conn. — A woman has been arrested after a fatal hit-and-run occurred in East Haven Friday evening, according to East Haven police.

Elizabeth Cronk, 45, was located at Autumn Ridge Apartments on Gerrish Avenue and taken into custody after striking and killing Gina LaVacca, 47, of East Haven, in a white hatchback style vehicle, police said.

Cronk is charged with Evading Responsibility Resulting in Death and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License, according to police.

Police said that at approximately 9:59 p.m. on Friday officers and members of the East Haven Fire Department were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Boston Avenue after a pedestrian was struck. When on scene, first responders determined that the suspect vehicle fled the scene and the victim suffered life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses said the suspect fled east on Main Street, according to police. After canvassing the area, police obtained surveillance footage that they said showed the white hatchback style vehicle strike the pedestrian and flee East on Main Street. The pedestrian, LaVacca, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said that when several officers began searching the town’s center district, Officer Dean Bibens and Micah Belcher found the white hatchback style vehicle in the parking lot of Autumn Ridge Apartments. With assistance from Sgt. Ryan Gorman and Det. John Trinh, police quickly located and arrested Cronk.

Cronk is being held on a $250,000 surety bond and will appear in court on Monday in New Haven, according to police.

The incident is still under investigation by the South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit; anyone with any relevant information is asked to call police at 203-468-3820.
