Hamden police arrest man following pellet gun incident last month

HAMDEN, Conn. — An arrest has been made following a pellet gun incident on last month in Hamden during which multiple people were shot with pellets, according to the Hamden Police Department.

On Thursday, Hamden police arrested David Bertuglia, 44, in connection with pellet gun incident, according to a release from Hamden police.

Police said Bertuglia was charged with first-degree assault – serious physical injury, first-degree assault – discharge of a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon, reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, and disorderly conduct.

Around 4:55 p.m. on April 24, Hamden police responded to the area of Spruce Bank Road after a person fishing said they were shot in the arm by what they believed was a BB gun, police said, noting the victim said the person who shot them fled in a vehicle; officers were unable to locate the vehicle or the suspect at that time.

At 6:48 p.m. that evening, Hamden police responded to the area of Ives Street and Spruce Bank Road following a 911 call reporting a person had been shot, according to police. Hamden police said they located a victim with injuries consistent with having been shot multiple times in the face, although it was not immediately clear what kind of gun was used.

According to police, they located a suspect, who was still on scene and holding what appeared to be a rifle; the suspect was pointing the weapon at their own head and threatening self-harm. As officers spoke to the suspect from behind cover, the suspect pointed the gun at the officers and began firing, police said, noting that officers realized the weapon was a pellet gun as it struck police vehicles, causing damage.

Police said that officers engaged the suspect with “less lethal” bean bag projectiles that struck the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and taken to the hospital after sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Bertuglia was identified as the suspect, police said, and he was charged. According to police, Bertuglia was held on a $500,000.
