Man who died in reservoir in Oxford was a student at CCSU, according to the university

According to DEEP, Seymour Reservoir #2 in Oxford is not an area designated for swimming.

OXFORD, Connecticut — A man who died after swimming in a reservoir in Oxford Thursday has been identified, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

On Friday, DEEP identified Kai Thomas Boapeah, 21, from Ghana, Africa as the victim.

DEEP said that the EnCon police, along with the town of Oxford's police and fire departments, and the Region 5 Dive Team went to Seymour Reservoir #2 for a report of a swimmer who went under the water and did not resurface.

Boapeah was found and recovered by a dive team, according to DEEP. After CPR was performed, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Boapeah's death was accidental, according to Central Connecticut State University Monday. EnCon police led the investigation into the incident.

According to DEEP, Seymour Reservoir #2 is not an area designated for swimming.

CCSU said that Boapeah attended the school as a computer science major and was going into his junior year in the fall. 

"We are very saddened to share this tragic news," said Dr. Zulma Toro, president of the university, in a statement. "Please keep Kai's family in your thoughts and prayers. The Central community extends its sincere thanks to the first responders who courageously tried to save his life."

CCSU added that he was described by friends from the school's Africana Student Organization as a "very talented musician and kind person."

Counseling services have been made available for students affected by the tragedy, according to CCSU. Any student looking to talk to a counselor at the Student Wellness Center can call 860-832-1926 to set up an appointment or walk in. 

The services are provided at no charge for registered students, CCSU said.
