Police identify woman shot, killed after fight in Meriden

Officials said the woman was pronounced dead at this scene and that everyone involved knew each other.

MERIDEN, Conn — A woman is dead after a fight led to a shooting in Meriden, police said.

Meriden police were called to the area of State Street and Mill Street near the Meriden Green just after 10 p.m. Monday. When they got to the scene, they found a woman had been shot. First responders gave her aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was identified by police Tuesday as Beth Ndwiga, 28, of Meriden.

Officials learned during the initial investigation that the people who were involved in the fight, including the woman who was shot, all knew each other. The victim was targeted, according to officials. Police said they have no reason to believe there is any threat or danger to the public.

The Meriden Green was closed throughout Tuesday morning as police processed the scene. The Meriden Green is now open to the public.

According to police, detectives gathered information around 12 p.m. that revealed a woman who was potentially involved in the incident lived in one of the West Main Street apartments on the second floor. Police said investigators also gathered information to believe that the woman was in the company of an unidentified man at the time of the shooting, and that the weapon had not been located.

Out of precaution for the safety of the community, police said they evacuated residents from the building, blocked off area streets and diverted traffic.

After a search warrant was signed by a SWAT team, police made multiple attempts to ensure that anyone inside the apartment could come out "peacefully and voluntarily."

Despite being found unoccupied, police said their investigation inside the apartment is still active and ongoing.

West Main Street was closed off at Colony Street Tuesday, but reopened as of 6:30 p.m., officials said.

At this time, police have not named any suspects. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call Detective John Wagner at 203-630-6334.
