MERIDEN, Conn. — A Middletown man was arrested in a robbery and assault of two clerks at a Meriden store, according to the city's police department Wednesday.

Adrian Ayala-Garo, 31, of Middletown, is facing charges of criminal trespass in the first degree, robbery in the third degree and assault in the second degree.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, officers went to the American Corner Store, located on 64 East Main St., after receiving a report about an assault and a robbery.

Investigators learned that Ayala-Garo, wearing a "face mask, glasses, hoodie and rubber gloves," was walking around the store without purchasing anything and was asked to leave, according to police.

He then went around the counter, punching one of the clerks in the face and assaulting another, police said, noting that one was left with a "possible broken nose, chipped tooth and a possible concussion."

After failing an attempt to open the register drawer with his own set of keys, Ayala-Garo grabbed the register drawer with several thousand dollars inside and left the store, police said.

Using the description provided from the store clerks and security camera footage, police said they were able to identify Ayala-Garo, who was found lying shirtless in a yard on Crown Street, partially behind a cement style wall on Crown Street.

Ayala-Garo's face tattoo matched the pictures that were seen in the security footage, police said. Officers also seized "a large sum of cash, clothing, gloves and glasses" that were described in the incident.

An Uber had arrived to pick Ayala-Garo up after he was taken into custody, police said. He was held on a $250,000 bond.
