'Sudden death' of man found in stream ruled a homicide: New Haven police

Police said that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined Rivera's manner of death to be a homicide by strangulation.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A homicide investigation is underway in New Haven after a body was found in a stream on Friday, according to the city's police department Tuesday.

Officers went to the area of Hemingway Street by Eastern Street at 7:10 a.m. on Friday after receiving a report of a man face down in the stream, police said. 

The man, later identified as Miguel Rivera, 62, of New Haven, was declared dead by the fire department at the scene, according to police. A preliminary examination of Rivera at the scene from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found no signs of trauma.

In a release Tuesday, police said that the OCME performed an autopsy and determined Rivera's manner of death to be a homicide by strangulation. 

Any witnesses or individuals with information regarding the incident is asked by police to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or the anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
