NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A man was arrested following a fatal stabbing at a convenience store in New Haven, the city's police department said Monday.
According to police, Antwine Mike, 48, of New Haven, is facing a murder charge after turning himself in.
The investigation began on June 1 at 1:09 a.m. after police were told that a man, identified as Travis James, 47, had walked into St. Raphael's Hospital in critical condition. Police said his injury was initially reported as a gunshot wound and later determined to be from a stabbing.
James later died of his injuries, according to police.
Investigators learned that James was arguing with an unknown person at Sam's Mart on Whalley Avenue, which eventually led to him being stabbed, police said. He was then driven to the hospital where he was dropped off.
Based on surveillance video evidence and tips from locals in the area as well as officers familiar with him, New Haven police identified Mike as the suspect in the stabbing. Police said they obtained a warrant for his arrest Sunday, working closely with the State's Attorney's office.
Mike is being held on a $2 million bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said. "I would also like to thank members of the New Haven community who reached out to us to provide us with information: your help is greatly appreciated. This case is a great example of our officers and community working together to create a safer city."
