Man pleads guilty to attempted murder of New Haven officer

The incident happened in 2022 as New Haven officer Chad Curry responded to a car crash.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven man has pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including attempted murder of a New Haven police officer and threatening a woman with a gun back in 2022.

In September 2022, Jose Claudio threatened a woman with a gun in the Fair Haven section of the city. Less than a month later in October, around 1:30 a.m., New Haven officer Chad Curry was called to a car crash at Chapel Street and Blatchley Avenue. When Curry got to the scene, he found that a car had hit a utility pole.

Officials said Curry later found Claudio going in and out of the damaged car. Officials state that when Claudio saw Curry, he ran west on Chapel Street, and Curry turned his cruiser around and followed. At one point, Claudio showed a handgun and fired several shots at Curry, hitting the windshield of the cruiser.

According to the report, Curry got out of the car and returned fire. It was then Claudio ran across the intersection, took cover behind a van, and continued firing at the officer who was in the middle of the intersection.

Curry was struck twice during the exchange of gunfire, officials said. Curry ran back to his cruiser, and Claudio then ran up Blatchley Avenue, firing more shots in Curry's direction. Officials said Claudio fired nine times in the direction of Curry, who was struck in his ear and shoulder.

Officials issued an arrest warrant for Claudio, and a multi-agency investigation led to Claudio's apprehension in Hartford a day later.

When he was taken into custody, New Haven and Hartford police officials found he was in possession of two guns, one of which was forensically linked to the shooting of Curry.

Claudio is a felon and was prohibited under state law from having guns.

Claudio was charged with attempted murder, assault on a public safety officer, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, and first-degree threatening in relation to the incident in Fair Haven the prior month.

In December 2023, Inspector General Robert Devlin determined that Officer Curry was justified in using deadly physical force in response to Claudio.

Claudio pled guilty to the charges on Sept. 9 and sentencing is expected on Nov. 4.
