NEW HAVEN, Conn. — New Haven police say a 17-year-old died after a shooting in the city Tuesday, which they believe is connected to the shooting death of a 16-year-old in the city on Nov. 22.
Around 7 p.m., a 17-year-old was shot on Shelton Avenue in a driveway. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he later died, police said. He has not been identified at this time.
According to police, the 17-year-old was friends with 16-year-old Uzziah Shell, who died in a shooting on Goffe Street on Nov. 22.
New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson believes the two shootings are connected.
“It’s terrible, this is something that we constantly try and stop after the 16-year-old's death, we had many sessions with his friends and other kids we believe could have been involved; everybody in the city is working hard. We have the youth department, CT VIP, the street outreach workers, we’re all trying to get these kids sat down conflict resolution, or if we can locate people with guns then we need to do that," Jacobson said.
There will be extra safety resource officers Wednesday at Riverside High School where police said the teen was a student.
The shooting on Tuesday comes a day after a 25-year-old man was fatally shot in the rear parking lot of 730 George St. in New Haven by a man wearing a mask.
Leonard Jahad, executive director for the Connecticut Violence Intervention Program, works with at-risk youth and worked with Uzziah Shell.
At-risk youth are often referred to the program by New Haven Public Schools, the police department or even federal authorities.
“We’re one of the few programs that I know actually get referrals from federal authorities," Jahad said. "You know when they investigate someone, they’ll say Jahad, please go knock on his door. He has a younger brother who is about to come off the porch…Please reach out to him before we have to investigate.”
Jahad said it's sad to know someone who was a part of their program fell victim to gun violence, but that more work has to be done to protect the youth.
