NORTH HAVEN, Conn. — North Haven officials are cleaning up after an Amtrak train collided with the trailer portion of a tractor-trailer Friday morning.
The crash happened just before 6 a.m. at the railroad crossing on Sackett Point Road. According to fire officials, a tractor-trailer carrying paper was stuck in traffic and wasn't able to clear the crossing. The Amtrak train, traveling from Springfield, Massachusetts to Norfolk, Virginia, then crashed into the trailer.
Officials said the truck's river and the train's operator were evaluated for injuries. North Haven police said there were only minor injuries reported.
According to officials, the Amtrak was carrying 107 people at the time, and none reported injuries.
The train managed to stop a fourth of a mile down from the crossing.
Amtrak released a statement regarding the crash:
On Friday, Aug. 9, Amtrak train 141 was traveling from Springfield, Mass. to Norfolk, Va. at approx. 5:51 a.m. ET when a vehicle obstructing the track came into contact with the train at a crossing in Hamden, Conn. There were no reported injuries to the 97 passengers onboard. Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.
