West Haven officer assaulted during traffic stop

When the person in the car was identified, police said they found that he had several outstanding arrest warrants. Police said he then assaulted an officer on scene.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A West Haven police officer was assaulted during a traffic stop on Saturday, resulting in the arrest of the suspect and another passenger. 

Police said that an officer on field training along with his Field Training Officer were conducting proactive motor vehicle stops when they saw a vehicle with an expired paper license plate.      

A motor vehicle stop was conducted. When the person in the car was identified, police said they found that he had several outstanding arrest warrants.  Police said he then assaulted an officer on scene.      

While they were investigating, the officer in training located a "Ghost Gun" with an illegal 30-round extended magazine with 30 rounds of ammunition. A "ghost gun" is commonly referred to as an illegally manufactured firearm that does not have a serial number, as is required by law.

The suspect, Shaka McKnight, 30, was charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Illegal Manufacture of a Firearm, Illegal Possession of a High Capacity Magazine, Weapons in a Motor Vehicle, Illegal Transfer of a Firearm, Criminal Impersonation, Interfering With an Officer. McKnight was held on a $500,000 bond.

A second passenger of the vehicle was also arrested. Sandra Cruz, 29, was charged with Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit, and Illegal Possession of a High Capacity Magazine. Cruz was held on a $75,000 bond.     

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on numerous motor vehicle charges and released.
