STONINGTON, Conn. — A Rhode Island man turned himself into Connecticut State Police on Wednesday after a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 north in Stonington in January left a woman dead.
State police said Joseph Teixeira, 22, of East Providence, R.I., is facing charges of failure to drive at a reasonable distance apart and misconduct with a motor vehicle.
He was released from custody on a $25,000 bond and is expected to appear in New London Superior Court on Jan. 8, 2025.
The crash happened at 11:53 a.m. on Jan. 11 in an advance warning area for a highway construction project.
Investigators determined that a Toyota Tundra was in front of a a Honda Civic in the left lane of two, just north of exit 91, where there were several signs warning drivers to slow down due to construction.
The Honda was stopped behind the Toyota when a Mazda CX-5, driven by Texiera, hit the Honda from the back, state police said. The Honda then traveled across the right lane and into an embankment in the roadside.
The driver of the Honda, identified as Barbara Dyer, 78, of North Franklin, died in the crash.
The Mazda went onto its right side and came to a stop within the grassy portion of the median, while the Toyota came to a stop within the left lane..
Investigators found that Texeira "failed to maintain a sufficient separation distance" from the Honda Civic and that he did not apply the brakes or take evasive action in time to avoid the crash.
They also found that he was driving at about 76 to 82 mph, in excess of the 65 mph speed limit, before applying the brakes to avoid the crash.
