VOLUNTOWN, Conn — A man died after a motorcycle collided into a metal beam guardrail in Voluntown Thursday afternoon, according to Connecticut State Police.
Based on preliminary information, investigators learned that the crash happened at 5:22 p.m. in the area of Shetucket Turnpike at the intersection of Campbell Mill Road and involved a gray 2023 Kawasaki KLR650. The motorcycle was traveling west on the turnpike, heading downhill and negotiating a left-hand curve, state police said.
Driving into the westbound roadside area with dirt and gravel, the motorcycle continued west and hit a metal beam guardrail, according to state police.
After the collision, the motorcycle continued traveling along the guardrail until it separated and went back into the westbound lane. State police said that it then slid onto its left side into the east roadside area consisting of grass and dirt before coming to a final stop.
The man who was riding the motorcycle, identified as Donald Sunny, 55, of Jewett City, was thrown off after the collision towards a wooded area off of the roadside and landed in an embankment.
Sunny was pronounced dead after being taken to William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, according to state police.
Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked by state police to contact Trooper Christopher Brett #691 at 860-848-6500x5.
