STONINGTON, Conn — Two people were slightly injured, one of them a state trooper, during an interstate pursuit of a possible kidnapping suspect out of Rhode Island late Sunday.
At 9:42 PM, police said a Connecticut State Police cruiser with its lights and sirens on, was involved in a crash at the intersection of Route 27 and Coogan Boulevard in the Mystic section of Stonington.
Investigators believe the cruiser came off of I-95 Exit 90 southbound and was traveling south on Route 27 when it hit a vehicle at the intersection of Coogan Boulevard. Then the cruiser veered into the Seaport Shell gas station parking lot and came to rest after striking an unoccupied parked vehicle.
Both the trooper and the driver of the second vehicle involved were transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
Police said the cruiser was part of a motor vehicle pursuit that had started in Rhode Island and had exited Interstate 95 at exit 90 with Rhode Island State Police and Connecticut State Police pursuing a reported kidnapping suspect.
The suspect vehicle eluded Connecticut Troopers and was reported to have crossed over the state line, back into Rhode Island.
Rhode Island troopers arrested Seth Parenteau, 40, of Southbridge, Massachusetts for Eluding Law Enforcement – High Speed Pursuit – First Offense, Reckless Driving – First Offense, Child Endangerment, and Obstructing Officer in Execution of Duty.
This is the fourth state trooper involved crash, and fifth police officer involved crash in a week. The other crashes happened in Waterford, Torrington, Meriden, New Haven.
