WILLINGTON, Conn. — A young woman is dead and four people were taken to the hospital after a car crash in Willington Saturday night, according to Connecticut State Police.
Based on preliminary information, state police said they determined the crash happened at 10:12 p.m. when the driver of a Subaru Legacy, heading south on River Road near Adamec Road, lost control of the car, causing it to turn over. Five people were inside the car at the time, with ages ranging from 19 to 21 years old.
One of the passengers, identified by state police as Maria Rita Da Mata, 19, of Bethel, died after suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The driver and three other passengers were taken to Hartford Hospital for "suspected minor injuries," according to state police.
The cause of the crash, including why the driver lost control of the car, is currently unknown. Anyone with information is asked by state police to contact Trooper Polci #1242 at Troop C by calling 860-896-3200.
Route 32 at Adamec Road was closed due to the crash at 10:21 p.m. Saturday but has since reopened, according to state police.
Central Connecticut State University said in an email Tuesday that Da Mata was one of their students. In a statement, University President Zulma R. Toro said, "My heart goes out to Maria Rita Da Mata's family. Maria was well on her way to completing a degree in Marketing from our School of Business. The university will keep the Da Mata family in our thoughts and prayers."
Toro also said that any students in need of counseling are encouraged to contact the Student Wellness Services office.
