WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — A criminal investigation is underway after the driver of a car owned by a Willimantic officer, who was off-duty at the time, left the scene of a multi-car crash Saturday, police said.
Officers arrived on Main Street at 2 a.m. after receiving a report about a collision involving multiple cars, police said.
Police determined that a car, owned by an off-duty officer from the Willimantic police department, was traveling east on Main Street when it crashed into a parked car, which then resulted in six other parked cars being hit, according to police. No one was hurt as all the cars were unoccupied at the time.
Police said the driver of the car that collided with the parked cars left the scene of the crash.
The officer who owned the car has been placed on paid leave during the investigation into the incident. Police have not named the officer at this time.
A criminal investigation has been opened, along with an internal investigation, according to police.
