POMFRET, Conn. — A Griswold man was arrested for a DUI crash in Pomfret last October that killed the passenger.
Ian Gillis, now 35, is accused of driving under the influence.
On Oct. 9, 2023, Gillis was driving on the 800 block of Pomfret Street when the 1967 Triumph GT6 went off the road and went down an embankment, state police said. The crash took the life of Elisha Eden Roode, 35, of Waterford, police said at the time of the crash.
A neighbor went outside and called 911 after finding the Triumph in the embankment, according to the arrest warrant. The neighbor told investigators they noticed Gillis was "coherent and conscious" at the scene.
State police believe speed was a major factor in the crash, determining that Gillis was driving at least 70 mph at the time of the crash.
State police found multiple beer cans in the car, and some of them still had liquid in them, according to the arrest warrant. Blood tests also showed that Gillis had alcohol in his system.
Gillis turned himself in on Wednesday, June 19, and was charged with manslaughter, illegal operation of a vehicle while under the influence reckless driving and failure to drive on the correct side of the roadway. He was released on a $125,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
