WILMINGTON, Vt. — A Wolcott man is dead after a boat he was on in Vermont crashed over the weekend, according to officials.
Around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Wilmington police in Vermont were told there was a child who had possibly fallen into the Harriman Reservoir. They also received additional reports of a boat sinking with multiple people onboard.
Wilmington police and fire units went to multiple locations along Harriman Reservoir to attempt to find the boat in distress. As first responders got to the scene, there were more reports of a boat collision, with two people in the water and one of them unconscious.
Police said recreational boaters nearby helped find the two people in the water and took them to Mountain Mills East Recreational Area.
First responders gave CPR and other life-saving measures at the boat ramp by Deerfield Valley Rescue. One of the victims, 67-year-old Thomas Centinaro, was taken to a landing zone by first responders to be intercepted by Life Star. However, officials said Centinaro was pronounced dead at the landing zone.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Vermont also responded to the Wilmington Police Department to help with the investigation and to state a cause of death.
While investigating, police learned that Centerino and another were thrown from a 1984 Ebbtide Montego 170 motorboat. The boat had gone out of control after it struck a "submerged obstruction," according to officials.
Wilmington police were helped by High Country Marina, Fish and Wildlife, Vermont State Police, Windham County Sheriff's Office, Wilmington, and Whitingham Fire Departments, Dover Police Department, LifeStar, and Deerfield Valley Rescue.
The cause of death is still under investigation.
