CROMWELL, Conn. — The Travelers Championship held its annual Charity Celebration on Tuesday at TPC River Highlands to celebrate the tournament’s impact beyond the golf course.
The 2024 event set a record by generating more than $3.2 million for 206 charities, according to a release from the Travelers Championship.
Many of the participating nonprofits had representatives in attendance on Tuesday, including individuals from Webster Bank, which sponsors the tournament’s Birdies for Charity program.
Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube said he considered it a privilege to celebrate a successful tournament that set a record for the most money it has ever raised for charity.
“We’re grateful for everyone’s support and want to thank our dedicated title sponsor, Travelers, along with our volunteers, our tournament staff, the best fans in golf and our community for their help and hard work,” Grube said.
As a PGA TOUR Signature event, the 2024 Travelers Championship had a $20 million purse and drew many of the world’s top golfers to Connecticut. Seven of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking and nearly every top 50 player who was eligible to complete participated in the tournament, according to the Travelers Championship.
Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, continued his magical year in Cromwell, winning the event in a one-hole playoff over Tom Kim. Scheffler has often spoken fondly about the event; he praised the Travelers Championship for its charitable work.
“It’s really special for us to be a part of the Travelers Championship. It’s such a well-run event, and they do a great job of taking care of the players, the families and the community,” Scheffler said. “I want to congratulate Travelers and the Travelers Championship for generating [more than] $3 million for over 200 charities.”
Since Travelers became a title sponsor in 2007, the tournament has raised more than $31 million for over 900 nonprofits throughout the region, donating 100% of its net proceeds to charity, according to the Travelers Championship.
Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers, is proud of the tournament’s strong annual field and called Scheffler a great champion before shifting his attention to the impact that has been made outside of the game.
“The real winners are the local charities that Travelers Championship Supports,” Bessette said. “The impact they have on so many is an inspiration, and they’re the reason we strive to make the tournament better every year.”
