WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A scooter operator is dead after a car crashed into them in West Haven, police said.
The crash happened just after 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the area of First Avenue and Mix Avenue. Initial 911 callers stated it was a crash between a motorcycle and a car, but responding officers found it was a scooter.
When the first responders got to the scene, they found the rider with critical injuries, and they were rushed to the hospital. It's unknown if he was wearing a helmet, police said. Friday morning, West Haven police officials said the scooter operator died from his injuries. He has not been identified at this time.
According to police, witnesses at the scene told officers that the car that crashed into the scooter did not stop or render aid and instead drove onto Interstate 95 nearby and away from the scene.
The highway's entrance ramp was closed for hours but has since reopened.
Police said Friday morning that the evading car and the driver have not been found at this time.
