MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Middletown police said crews have located the body of the man who they said jumped into the Connecticut River off the Arrigoni Bridge on Monday.
Middletown and Portland police were called to the bridge around 9:40 a.m. on the report of a man jumping into the river. When officers got to the scene, they were told that the man parked his vehicle in an active construction area on the Portland side of the bridge. From there, they jumped over the fence and into the river, police said.
Police confirmed the man was unrelated to the bridge construction crew. The eastbound lanes were closed for construction at the time, and Portland police said that maintenance workers and inspectors were not involved in the incident.
The man has been identified but FOX61 is choosing not to name him.
Chief Jim Trzaski with the South Fire District said they, along with Middletown and Portland fire departments, are searching and that there are "multiple vessels" in the water and a drone in the air.
Portland, Middletown, South District fire departments, police departments, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection have responded to the scene to find the man.
The incident is being investigated by the Portland Police Department with the assistance of the Middletown Police Department.
